Buying guide

Espresso machines for small kitchens.

2 min readUpdated October 23, 2026

The short answer

Measure three things before you choose: the width you can give the machine, the depth of your counter and the height under your cabinets. Then leave room to work, because you will lift lids to add beans and water and slide out the drip tray. Below, every machine is sorted by its listed width.

How to measure.

  1. Width

The space between whatever sits on either side. Add a little room for your hands and for the steam wand.

  2. Height under the cabinets

Machines with a bean hopper or a water tank that fills from the top need extra room above them to open the lid.

  3. Depth

Check the cord and whether the water tank comes out from the back or the side: you may need to pull the machine forward to refill it.

  4. One appliance or two

A machine with a built-in grinder takes one footprint. A machine plus a separate grinder takes two, side by side.

Yes, if it has a bean hopper or a water tank that fills from the top. Check the listed height and leave a few extra inches to lift the lid comfortably.

Is a machine plus a separate grinder wider than an all-in-one?

It can be: side by side, the Breville Bambino and the Smart Grinder Pro add up to about 14.8 inches of listed width. Compare that with the width of each all-in-one machine below.
