The short answer
A built-in grinder puts the whole routine in one machine: it grinds fresh beans straight into the portafilter, saves counter space and means one less appliance to buy. A separate grinder takes more room, but you can keep it if you later upgrade the machine, and it also grinds for drip coffee or French press.

More settings allow finer adjustments when you change beans or the shot runs too fast or too slow. Most listings publish the number.
Some machines dose by time; others weigh the coffee with a built-in scale, which takes the guesswork out of the amount in each shot.
A larger hopper means refilling less often. If you drink little coffee, a smaller amount of beans in the machine stays fresher.
Assisted machines help with dosing and tamping, the steps that take the most practice. Look for it in the “Operation” line of each product page.

Questions
Espresso needs a fine, even grind, so the grinder matters as much as the machine. Between models, what changes is the number of grind settings, the burrs when the listing names them, and how the dose is measured. Each product page lists them.
Then a machine without a grinder, such as the Breville Bambino, is worth considering: you keep the grinder you know and save counter space.
No. We compare the specifications each model publishes in its Amazon listing and, where the listing is silent, on the manufacturer’s official website. We do not rank machines by our own tests, and we never show borrowed ratings.
